Columbiana High School

Ten Columbiana High School Students had the opportunity to travel to Beaumont Scout Reservation in Ashtabula Thursday April 25, 2019 to compete in the Area 2 Envirothon.  The competition is outdoors all day and students compete by taking identification tests in the areas of soils, forestry, aquatics, wildlife, and current environmental issues.  Team captain Evan Gallo, and team members Klara Crisp, Mary Nyers, Imagin Whitehouse, and Roman Booth competed as the Columbiana Red Team, and the Columbiana White Team consisted of captain Noah Horne, Seth Birch, Richard Ulam, Stephanie Novak, and Lily Marsco.  Out of 45 teams that participated in this competition, Columbiana Red earned the 21st spot and Columbiana White the 22nd. So both teams scored higher overall than more than half the competitors earning an overall score of 61%, missing moving on to the state envirothon by a 20% margin.  The revival of a previous course at CHS, field biology, provided these students the opportunity to study these topics in depth and to prepare for this competition learning how to estimate board feet of lumber, analyze soil maps, and identify key species of trees and wildlife. The advisor for the CHS envirothon teams, Colleen Campbell, traveled with the teams to Ashtabula, but is unable to assist them during the competition.
