3D is Not Just for Movies Anymore

Columbiana, OH –3D capabilities have reached a new level in not just entertainment,
but also in the medical and engineering fields. Doctors are now able to use 3D devices
to view a patient’s heart and find better ways to fix problems and save lives. The students
at the Columbiana Schools are getting that very same opportunity. The district has
purchased two 3D AV Rover carts for students to use. The carts are equipped with 30
3D glasses that enable the students to view videos and interactive modules in full 3D.

At the elementary level, students are able to use the 3D carts for lessons in language arts,
math and science. There is an entire curriculum that accompanies the carts. For example,
in language arts, the students are able to work with phonemes and punctuation, and in math
they work with estimating, counting, and telling time.  Science materials include a
sun/moon explorer, seasons, day/night, and orbit. All of these materials contain interactive
demonstrations or selections for students to make. They also have a science program that
covers physical, life, earth, technology, personal health, resources, and environmental changes.

At the middle and high school levels, students are exposed to over 1300 topics covering math
and science topics. Math topics include operations, geometry, trigonometry and calculus.
Science topics include physical, life, earth and space, anatomy, biology, and social perspectives
in science.  There are also simulation packages that cover chemistry, anatomy, and math and an
extensive cyberscience program that provides virtual dissection experiences covering topics
that include astronomy, botany, earth science, anatomy, mechanical, microbiology, and zoology.

“The carts have grabbed the attention of administrators, teachers, and students and we are
extremely pleased with the opportunity to have these available for our teachers and students,”
said Technology Director, Jason Martin.

Columbiana is the only school district in the area that offers these unique devices to their
students. This new initiative has recently been highlighted by WKBN.

Columbiana Lip Dub

On December 19th students attending South Side Middle School will be participating
in the filming of what’s known as a ‘lip dub’ video set to the songs “Let’s Get it Started”
by The Black Eyed Peas and “Can’t Hold Us” by Macklemore. The intent of this project is
to produce an innovative, fun video for the purpose of supporting Columbiana Schools.

The goal will not only showcase our spirit in Columbiana but also allow our high school
multimedia and broadcast students to direct, produce, and edit the video. We hope to
show that Columbiana takes pride in our schools and our students have many great
accomplishments in academics, sports, and other organizations.

THEY make our schools the best .

We are asking that ALL of our students dress in Extreme Clipper Wear in order to make
this ‘lip dub’ venture a success! Each lip dub participant will need to complete this form
and return it by December 12th .

Students attending Joshua Dixon and Columbiana High School will participate during the new year.

Congratulations to South Side Middle School
